Franklin Central was honored to host Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Champion’s Together director, Mr. Lee Lonzo, for a special presentation on April 17th. Accompanying Mr. Lonzo on the field was IHSAA Student Advisory Committee Rep and Franklin Central Varsity Tennis Player, Junior Lydia Laker, who helped coordinate the charity funding efforts for Champions Together. Also uniting on the field were Franklin Central athletes representing many sports, Unified Track Team alumni, Coach Schwartz, Coach Lewis, Athletic Directors Mr. Orr and Mr. Stevens, Principal Huotari, Mrs. McCormick, FC Special Education Teacher Mrs. Speckman, and Unified Track and Field head coach Joanna Cody.
“Champions Together is a collaborative partnership between the Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana that promotes servant leadership among student athletes while changing their lives as well as the lives of those with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics International is supporting Champions Together as a model program to activate schools through “Project Unify” which also has the endorsement of the National Federation of High Schools.”
Franklin Central was also honored that Mrs. McCormick, widow of beloved FC business teacher, Mr. John McCormick, was able to join the Flashes’ Family on the field. Mr. McCormick was instrumental four years ago obtaining funds through the FC McCormick’s Cafe for Unified Track uniforms. Without Mr. McCormick, we would not have our Champions Together Unified Track Team. This team honors his altruistic legacy. We appreciate all that the McCormick Family has done to help Champions Together.
