The Franklin Central boys soccer team made the short trip on Thursday night (9/19) to Holder Field to take on the Southport Cardinals on their Senior Night. The Flashes came very close to taking a 0-0 tied match to halftime, however, a lack of communication and a bad play resulted in a Cardinal Forward having the ball 1-on-1 versus the GK and it was an extremely easy goal for Southport. At halftime, the Flashes worked on making adjustments and came out in the second half with much more aggressive, team play. FC had some chances but were unable to convert. Southport was then able to score their second goal, after passing by three FC players who did not play good, fundamental defense. The Flashes were able to get on the board and make the score 2-1 when Senior Greg Dawes challenged Southport’s GK on a restart that was driven into the box by Sophomore Lolo Paw. Dawes was able to win the ball away from the Cardinals Keeper and poke the ball into the net. With 5 minutes to go in the match, the Flashes were still competing and giving good effort while trying to draw even with the Cardinals. Unfortunately, on 2 separate, back-to-back occasions, FC players reverted to playing bad, non-fundamental defense and lost 4-1.
